Regional Bariatric offers four surgical weight loss options– The Sleeve Gastric Bypass (SGB), commonly referred to as the Mini Gastric Bypass, Roux en Y Gastric Bypass (RNY), Sleeve Gastrectomy and the Adjustable Gastric Banding (AGB). Excellent weight loss results can be realized by any of the procedures, particularly when patients are dedicated to following their surgeon’s post operative diet and follow up recommendations.
There are different approaches to weight-loss surgery. Only a full review of your particular situation, by you and your physician, will determine the right procedure for you.
Surgical procedures that treat obesity work by either limiting the amount of food a person can eat before becoming full; or by altering the digestion process – producing an inability to absorb all the calories and nutrients th at are ingested.
Sleeve Gastric Bypass (SGB)
The Sleeve Gastric Bypass (SGB), also referred to as the Mini-Gastric Bypass or MGB, surgery does both. It’s a minimally invasive procedure that partitions the stomach into a long, narrow tube and a separate larger piece. The smaller stomach is attached about 6 feet down in the small intestine. The larger stomach is sealed and left unattached.
 Roux en Y Gastric Bypass
Another surgical option is the Roux en y gastric bypass (RNYGB). This operation is commonly done in many centers around the world. The main difference between a RNYGB and a SGB is that it allows food to bypass part of the small intestine. This is accomplished by dividing the bowel into two pieces. Then the lower limb of the bowel carrying only bile, and not food, is reattached approximately one foot further downstream. The benefit of this extra step is to keep bile from refluxing back up into the esophagus and causing irritation or damage.
 Sleeve Gastrectomy
Sleeve gastrectomy is a form of surgical weight loss. During this weight loss procedure, the stomach is reduced in size by 85 percent. The remainder of the stomach is removed. This form of weight loss surgery is performed using laparoscopic instruments and is not reversible. The term “sleeve” refers to the new look of the stomach pouch. The new sleeve is shaped like a banana or sleeve of a long sleeved shirt.
 Gastric Banding
A fourth method, adjustable gastric banding, limits food intake. It uses a device that is surgically implanted around the stomach to help people with morbid obesity lose weight and improve or resolve obesity-related health conditions including type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea and high cholesterol.

About the Procedures
Unlike some other kinds of bariatric surgery, all four of these procedures are done laparoscopically, completely through five one-inch incisions in the abdomen. In laparoscopic procedures, the surgeon never opens the abdomen. Bariatric surgery that is not done laparoscopically requires an incision of 6 to 12 inches across the abdomen. They are both typically completed in 35 minutes or less.
