Restorative
Care Unit (RCU)
Many patients who are ready to be discharged from the hospital
are not ready to return to their normal surroundings. They
require continued professional help to restore or recover
lost abilities. With 18 private rooms, the restorative care
unit is designed to ease patient transition from hospital
to home. This unit provides specialized, skilled nursing
care and offers a sensible alternative to nursing home care.
Emergency Center
This is a 28 bed Level III trauma center with a 7 bed Urgent
Care unit which provides care to more than 57,000 patients
each year ranging from neonates to geriatrics. The department
has a staff of more than 100 employees comprised of registered
nurses, nursing assistants, and unit secretaries. We offer
a variety of shifts and schedules. The following specialty
areas are integral to our mission of providing exceptional
health services to the people of our region: Trauma, Forensic
Nurse Examiner Program, Critical Care Transport and the
Disaster/Hazmat Program. Certification in Emergency Nursing
is held by approximately 20% of our nurses.
Dialysis Unit
This 6-bed unit is designed with 3 travel machines capable
of providing services to non-mobile patients in critical
care and other nursing units. The dialysis unit is where
patients come for hemodialysis treatments and receive quality
care from expert nurses using state-of-the-art equipment.
Dialysis nurses also manage peritoneal dialysis patients
and serve as consultants to the staff on the nursing units.
Dialysis service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
IV Therapy
The department of IV therapy provides intravenous nursing
care to patients within the hospital. The department is
composed of nurses who are highly skilled in performing
venipuncture and educated related to intravenous therapy.
They develop IV therapy policies and procedures with input
from the medical staff based on national standards. They
also monitor outcomes of IV therapy.
Diabetes Self-Care Management
Center
The Center offers comprehensive outpatient education and
support to individuals and groups. It has been recognized
by the American Diabetes Association as an approved diabetes
education program meeting the national standards for diabetes
self-management. Registered nurses work collaboratively
with registered dietitians and a physician medical director.
Most of the professional staff are certified diabetes educators
and two are certified insulin pump trainers.
Special Procedures/Radiology
Nurses and Radiologic Technologists work in 2 vascular rooms
assisting Interventional Radiologists with a variety of
procedures. These procedures include: fistulagrams, declotting
of dialysis grafts, insertion of dialysis catheters and
PICC lines, nephrostograms and insertion of percutaneous
nephrostomy tubes, vertebroplasties, and kyphoplasties.
The nursing staff consists of 3 full-time and 2 prn nurses.
The also assist throughout the Radiology Department with
diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as biopsies and
drainages, and in monitoring patients requiring close observation
while in the department.
Radiation Therapy
This department is a hospital based clinic which serves
the needs of adult inpatients and outpatients requiring
curative or palliative treatment for their disease. The
nursing staff is part of a multidisciplinary team. This
team provides patient education, management of treatment
side effects, and coordination of community resources to
deliver quality cancer care to patients and their families.
Operating Room
Perioperative nurses utilize the nursing process to ensure
individualized, professional, and scientific patient care.
They use a broad base of knowledge of nursing and the technical
aspects of surgery. These capabilities combined with past
experience, effective communication and teaching skills
facilitate the ability of the perioperative nurses to participate
as strong team members and patient advocates. Patient safety
is of most importance as our nurses ensure proper patient
identification, verification of correct surgical procedure
and site, and maintenance of sterile fields.
Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU)
Post Anesthesia Care Unit is a 10-bed unit which offers
Phase 1 care to all patients undergoing anesthesia. PACU
care for all ages and surgical procedures except post-cardiovascular
surgery. All RN’s in PACU have a critical care background
and all are ACLS certified. The staffing ratio is 1:2 for
adults and 1:1 for pediatrics.
Endoscopy
The Endosocopy Lab offers the latest technology in endoscopy
procedures, ranging from diagnostic testing to therapeutic
interventions. Our dedicated and highly skilled staff provides
quality care to a diverse patient population. Emphasis is
placed on providing exceptional patient care through collaboration,
teamwork and professional growth.
Day Hospital
The Day Hospital triad is comprised of an 18-room outpatient
care area, an 8-room surgical pre-admission unit and a 6-room
surgical admission unit. The outpatient care area is responsible
for preparation and recovery of diagnostic and/or radiological
testing patients; medical treatments, including blood transfusions,
injections, paracentesis, thoracentesis, and liver biopsy;
and pre-procedure prep and post-procedure recovery for all
surgical and cardiac catheterization outpatients. Surgical
pre-admission manages pre-op history, assessment and testing
of all incoming surgical patients, performing vital assessments,
pre-op preps and treatments. The Day Hospital operates Monday
– Friday, 6a.m. to 11p.m. with flexible scheduling
based on patient needs. Our values include staff education,

Wound Care
The Wound Care Center is an outpatient facility that treats
patients who have chronic non-healing wounds. Nurses in
this department are involved in the patient’s care
plan, case management, treatment and education. Each nurse
works as part of a care team including surgeons and physicians’
assistants.
Adult Health Center
The Adult Health Center provides primary care to the adult
indigent population of High Point. This care includes prevention,
diagnosis, treatment, education, and coordination of care.
The Center has an active caseload of approximately 3400
patients with a monthly average of 815 patient visits.
Inpatient Rehab Center
The Inpatient Rehab Center provides focused physical rehabilitation
to patients who still need round-the-clock nursing care.
Specialty-trained nurses work collaboratively with occupational,
physical, speech, and recreational therapists. The ultimate
goal of this 16-bed unit is to help patients return home
functioning as independently as possible.
Behavioral Health
Psych Smith Psychiatric Center is a 28 bed acute care unit
providing services to adults with mental illness and substance
abuse problems. Our focus is crisis intervention and stabilization
via therapy, education, and medication management using
an interdisciplinary approach. Our nurses work collaboratively
with our patients, our Medical Director, Nurse Practitioners,
Occupational Therapist, and Master's Level Therapists to
develop a treatment plan that will assist with achievement
of realistic goals.
Ambulatory Surgery Center
High Point Surgery Center is a free-standing multi-specialty
center in partnership with High Point Regional Hospital.
In February 2006, the Center received a 3-year approval
from the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health
Care (AAAHC). The nursing staff have years of experience
in providing specialized care to outpatients of all age
groups. Nurses can opt to work in preoperative, intra-operative,
post-anesthesia, or overnight recovery areas. The Center
performs approximately 6000 procedures each year maintaining
quality and patient satisfaction as evidenced by Press Ganey
scores in the 98th and 99th percentile.
Occupational Health
This nursing area cares for worker’s compensation
and employee health issues. Employee Health does pre-employment
health screens, maintains yearly TB testing, provides Flu
Clinics administering influenza vaccine, arranges annual
fit testing for respiratory isolation, conducts follow-up
review on employee exposures, and performs random drug and
alcohol testing. Occupational Health is part of the State
AOHP organization.
Clinical Denial Management
In this department, nurses provide clinical information
to insurance companies as required in order to obtain authorization
and payment for the urgent and emergent care provided at
HPRHS. The CDM nurses work with physicians to protect patients
by writing appeal letters when insurance companies deny
payment.
Information Technology/Clinical
Information Services
These departments implement and support a wide variety of
computer applications used across the health system. Nurses
in these departments serve as analysts, collaborating with
other departmental clinicians and multidisciplinary teams.
Key duties performed include project management, application
screen-flow development, table maintenance, and report writing.
