Porta-Cath Surgery - (Journal Date: 3/10/05)
Arrived at 9:00 a.m. at the HPRHS Hospital to have my poor chest hairs shaved. I joked with the nurse that it took me over 30 years to finally grow some chest hairs and she took them out in about 30 seconds!!
The general anesthesia kicked in shortly after I was wheeled into the operating room. The procedure only took about 20 minutes.
A small titanium disk about the size of a nickel was installed in the chest area just below the skin. A tube connects the disk to the main vein going into the heart. The result was a small 2" incision (with stitches) and what I call a "quick connect" for future chemo treatments.
Later that evening, I was able to attend my daughter's basketball game which they won by eight points!! Friends delivered a home-cooked meal which was really appreciated.
We need to remember to look for assistance whenever we need it. Sometimes it is hard to allow others to help, but there is always comfort somewhere and caring people really do want to help...let them!! Look for help with the kids, meals, transportation, cleaning, yard work, and definitely FRIENDSHIP!! Help friends to help you by thinking of specific tasks that they can do. You really do help others by helping them help you!!
