New Linear Accelerator Commissioned
6/4/2007
High Point Regional Health System launched a new state-of-the-art Varian Linear Accelerator on Friday, June 1st in the Radiation Therapy Department of the Hayworth Cancer Center.
The new equipment is the only one of its kind in Guilford County and is designed to produce high energy x-rays used for cancer treatment. This new technology is Image Guided Radiation Therapy, or IGRT, where images are taken of the area to be treated just prior to the radiation treatment and to ensure that the tumor area is being covered by the radiation.
High Point Regional also has Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy capabilities, or IMRT, which will become an even more valuable treatment tool coupled with the IGRT imaging function.
