High Point Regional Announces Organizational Changes

High Point Regional Health System announced today it will be closing its Restorative Care Unit (RCU) later this month and identified other positions where a reduction in services is necessary.

Unfortunately, these changes affect 51 employees,” said Jeff Miller, president, High Point Regional Health System. “We will offer other positions within the health system to most of these employees. If there are employees for whom we do not have an open position, we will offer a severance package and make them eligible for rehire.”

The RCU opened in 1993 to meet a community need for nursing home beds. Over time, many nursing home beds have been added in the community. With the opening of the hospital’s Inpatient Rehab Center in 2003, the RCU was reduced in size by nearly half. These new facilities have significantly reduced the number of patients treated on the RCU and there is no longer a need for the hospital to provide this service.

Patients currently receiving care on the unit will be relocated to the most appropriate setting. The hospital will continue to work with local nursing homes and home care agencies to ensure patients are cared for appropriately.

Health care is not immune to present economic conditions, Miller added, As one of our region's low-cost providers of health care, we have an obligation to provide exceptional care in a cost-effective manner. The changes announced today are the result of the organization's need to make necessary financial adjustments and we anticipate these changes will position us for continued success.

The hospital expects these changes will save approximately $750,000 annually.
